You do know that Target is killing it right now, right? Seriously, I walk into a few in the area and they look like department stores! I often think about how much retail is changing these days; my mom owns home decor store, and had to close earlier this year because retail is just not doing well in general. I feel like Macy’s and JCPenney will be going the way of Sears soon; that is, extinct. Target, on the other hand, is definitely doing what it takes to be in the end game.
Honestly, I don’t know why they don’t just put in a bar so that moms like me can enjoy some bubbles while we spend a few precious hours away from our children. Seriously, I can’t be the only one who claims a need to go shopping for diapers if only so that I can get a few moments of peace and quiet.
I did a bad thing recently and got sucked into their home decor section. Between Magnolia Home, Threshold, and Opal House, Target’s home decor game is on point. They have some of the best nautical home decor for the summer that’s just begging to be taken home with me!
I don’t know what it is about garlands right now, but I seriously have three of them for the summer. This cute little star banner is perfect for over our kitchen window! And don’t even get me started about Joanna’s line. I can’t pass it too often or my bank account would hate me.
One of my goals with Joelle Charming is to show people that you don’t need to have the perfect house for things to be beautiful. That’s why one of my taglines is “the only thing you won’t find here is perfection.” I’m not an interior designer, and I rent my home. It’s far from the “ideal” that we see all over blogs these days.
My main priority for my home is to just make it feel like everyone is welcome. The bright white, sterile spaces that you see in so many blogs just isn’t reality for so many of us. Not only that, but I never want my family or guests to feel like they aren’t allowed to live in my home. I have two kids, things get messy! That’s just how it works.
I guess where I’m going is, I love using color to decorate. We have some red furniture, and I’ve always just gravitated to navy and mustard yellow when decorating. These colors give way to nautical inspired decor, which is where I went this summer. I can never have too many boats or stripes! I actually got this boat garland last year; it’s a little more difficult for me to keep Remi from playing with it this time around.
A really big value for Robert and I is to eat together as a family as often as possible. That doesn’t just mean the occasional Sunday night dinner; if we are all home, then we eat together. There are days when we eat all three meals at the table as a family. I don’t usually have the table made up with full place settings like this, but you’ll often see fresh flowers (they’re my weakness) and candles to make the table look nicer. I can’t be the only one that spends far too much on candles, right?
A few years ago, when gold flatware was just becoming popular, I used to hunt for it at flea markets and antique shops. Stores hadn’t yet started to carry it, and it was obsession for me. Now, you can find gold flatware almost anywhere, and for cheap too! These place settings came from Target, and are only $2 per piece!
While my home isn’t this clean and pretty all the time, it’s nice to enjoy it when it does! The summer is the perfect time to appreciate your home for all that it is, rather than what you wish it would be. Maybe all you need are a few new things to spruce up your space for the season.
