So, I’m not a fan of sweet drinks. Give me a margarita, extra sour, and I’m good. Anything with too much simple syrup or, god forbid, sour mix, and it’s just not going to happen.
I think that’s why I’ve never actually ordered a tequila sunrise in a restaurant. Orange juice AND grenadine? I mean, if you’ve ever had store-bought grenadine, it’s pretty much the sweetest syrup you’re going to find.
I knew that I wanted to try something different with my tequila sunrise. If you didn’t know, I really love tequila. I’ve been sharing recipes and other fun stuff over on my own tequila blog for a few months now, but I decided to start putting it here instead. I will, however, continue my tequila Instagram! That shit’s just too fun to shut down.
ANYWAY. What was I saying? Oh! My sparkling tequila sunrise!
The key is to make your own grenadine. It’s pretty easy; just a traditional simple syrup, but made with pomegranate juice instead. You reduce it down so it’s a bit thicker and you’re golden. It’s not as *pretty* as the stuff you get in the store (sorry, no red #5 or whatever added), but that’s easily fixed when you add a few fresh pomegranate seeds. See? Beautiful! And delicious.
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup pomegranate juice
- Bring to a boil the sugar and pomegranate juice. Reduce to low and let simmer until liquid thickens, about fifteen minutes. Reduce from heat before using.
- 2 ounces blanco tequila
- 1/2 ounce grenadine
- 4 ounces (or so) sparkling clementine soda*
- Shake together tequila and grenadine with ice. Strain over fresh ice and add sparkling clementine soda. Garnish with fresh pomegranate seeds.
- *Trader Joe's has a GREAT sparkling clementine soda! IZZE is another amazing option. Say goodbye to regular orange juice in your tequila sunrise!
